Students Enjoy Environmental Day (April, 2008)

Sem students learn at the leaf center on Environmental DayBorchardt student looks at branch with magnifying glassYounger Elementary students who were not taking the TAKS test this week had an opportunity to get out into nature and enjoy the spring weather with Environmental Day. Several campuses, with the help of parent volunteers, conducted outdoor environmental science learning centers to let students learn about the parts of the leaf, draw pictures of things found in nature, play matching games with natural materials, and many other educational activities. This was an opportunity for the lower grades that do not participate in TAKS to be outside the building and not have to worry about being too noisy or not disrupting the test process for older students. The Environmental Day curriculum was part of Project Learning Tree and was distributed to campuses by the district’s elementary science instruction team, according to Melanie Cornelius, elementary science facilitator.
