Safety and Security at Frisco ISD

Frisco ISD is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our students, staff and visitors. Our comprehensive security program addresses prevention, intervention, student assistance, preparedness, emergency response and building security.

Frisco ISD is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for students, staff and visitors.

FISD Safety Programs Include:

  • A Crisis Management Plan is in place and a Crisis Management Team is located at each campus and at the district level
  • Through a combined effort of the City of Frisco and the FISD, School Resource Officers are assigned to each secondary school campus and are also available to the elementary campuses as they work toward their goal of establishing a good rapport and relationships between students and law enforcement. Their presence provides a deterrent to undesirable activity and their accessibility helps resolve situations quickly and offers a counseling ear to students. The SRO’s also provide the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program to students at the 6th grade level.
  • Innovative ChooseToCare program. ChooseToCare is a progressive twist on a proven concept – the “tip-line”.
  • Uniformed police officers are available to provide security and law enforcement services at all secondary campuses, athletic events and after hours special events
  • At intersections where city traffic engineers determine the need, the city and the school district work together to provide crossing guards for the safe passage of students to and from school.
  • Access control systems such as single points of entry, double doors and locked perimeter doors at campuses help provide a secure environment by limiting access to those persons with a legitimate need to be in the building.
  • Portable radios allow administrators and staff to communicate about what is happening anywhere on the campus at any given time. They are also available for teachers to take to the playground in case of an emergency, a concern or the need of nursing care.
  • Alarm systems with password protection protect all district facilities.
  • Criminal History searches are performed on all applicants for employment, all persons who volunteer in the schools and all contractors who work on district property.
  • K-9 interdiction services are used at unannounced times on secondary campuses, whereby specially-trained dogs inspect schools and parking lots for the presence of alcohol, drugs or explosive devices.
  • Through the last bond program (March 2003 - $478 million), Closed Circuit Television systems will be installed in all high traffic/public areas inside and outside of the schools to help administrators monitor activities and to act as a deterrent for activity such as vandalism.
  • The Transportation Department has installed a safety device on each bus which causes drivers to walk to the back of the bus, ensuring that "no child is left behind."
  • All bus drivers and coaches are CPR and first aid certified
  • Full-time nurses are on all campuses.
  • Information regarding the Texas Sexual Offender Registration Program
  • Privacy: Board policy that does not designate a student's address and phone number as directory information. Therefore, information is not released to anyone who requests these listings for any purpose, including soliciting business
  • FISD has AEDs on all campuses as a safety and welfare measure -
    What is an AED?
When a heart’s rhythm goes into an uncoordinated electrical activity called fibrillation, the heart twitches ineffectively and can’t pump blood. A defibrillator delivers an electric current through the chest wall to the heart, momentarily stunning it. While that may not sound therapeutic, it actually gives the heart an opportunity to resume beating effectively. Not very long ago, you could only find “defibs” in a hospital or other medical setting.

It’s important to note that a shock is not always needed. AEDs have built-in microprocessors that assess the patient’s heart rhythm through adhesive electrodes to judge whether defibrillation is necessary. If the device determines a shock is appropriate, it administers the appropriate level of current through adhesive electrode pads. AEDs aren’t cheap. Each unit costs about $3,000. But they are very accurate and have become increasingly easy to use. AEDs use voice prompts, lights, and text messages to tell the rescuer what steps to take.

Proper use of AEDs is a part of all CPR classes. You also may not be aware that every coach and bus driver in Frisco ISD is certified in CPR. In addition our campus nursing staff does annual training with all campus staff on appropriate use of the AED.

Experts say that during a sudden cardiac arrest, a victim’s chance of survival decreases by seven to ten percent for each minute he or she does without defibrillation. So quick thinking and appropriate action are paramount.

Frisco ISD is at the forefront of school districts in Texas in these efforts to ensure the safety of students, staff and community members.

Environmental Health & Safety

The Frisco I.S.D. is committed to providing a safe learning environment to all students and staff. The initial building design and operation & maintenance (O&M) programs include safety & environmental considerations that both meet and/or exceed governmental and local standards. District real estate transactions include comprehensive environmental phase one site assessments in the initial facility planning stages when deciding upon a new site for a campus. The findings of the studies are carefully considered prior to breaking ground on the new facilities.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) throughout district campuses is controlled via technologically advanced energy management systems that maximize energy efficiency while still providing the necessary control of humidity levels; contaminate filtration and fresh air distribution. Newly constructed FISD Campuses undergo IAQ benchmark sampling and as response actions may warrant due to unforeseen events.

The FISD has an award winning pest management program that employs the nationally recognized concept of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) when dealing with pest problems throughout the facilities. IPM simply involves using common sense, least toxic methods and physical controls in dealing with pest problems. This may take the form of physical barriers to pests, cultural controls of food products, general sanitation and periodic low toxicity pesticide applications.

Periodic safety inspections are conducted throughout FISD facilities to identify problems before they become an issue. Playground equipment per Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommendations is on a regular maintenance & operations program that involves inspections by an in-house Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI), with maintenance & repairs conducted as needed to prevent accidents or minimize injuries from occurring. Fire protection systems & extinguishers are continually being monitored and inspected to comply with local & national codes.

The overall Indoor Environmental Quality of Frisco I.S.D. facilities is something that encompasses a wide range of issues ranging from IAQ controls, IPM programs, ADA accessibility, O&M programs, and staff continuing education. The Facilities & Risk Management staff are proud of the district structures which are maintained for the students, staff and community of Frisco ISD, and will continue to be for many years to come.
